Growing up in Ohio in a fitness-minded family, Anita has always been involved in sports, exercise and healthy lifestyle habits. She began weight training her freshman year in high school, which was a requirement for her Track and Field team, Junior Olympics and her competition cheerleading squad. While attending Shawnee State University’s Occupational Therapy program Anita chose to change her focus with cheerleading and became a competition coach for area high school squads.

Anita Wins NOVA Fitness ContestAfter graduating from the Occupational Therapy program and working with Early Intervention, Pediatric Rehab and Adult-Neurological Rehab for 2 and a half years, Anita decided to relocate to Nashville. She continued with Pediatrics and Home Health Care in Nashville from the latter part of 1993 through 2001. Her love for fitness directed her toward Group Fitness Instruction in 1996 and she continues to teach primarily kickboxing, InnerStrength abs, body sculpting, and sports conditioning classes. Her certifications include “Turbo Kick” kickboxing certification and Children’s Fitness Certification.

With her desire to cheer/dance again and her love for football, Anita became a cheerleader for the Tennessee Titans Cheerleading Team in 1999. In 2000, she was chosen to represent the Titans on a USO tour in Asia along with a representative from St. Louis Rams, Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Washington Redskins, and Philadelphia Eagles. Anita remained on the cheerleading team through 2001, when she was asked to remain on board as a fitness coach for the 2002 squad and currently maintains her role with the Titans.

She became certified as a Personal Trainer through American Council on Exercise (A.C.E.) in 2002 and worked as an independent trainer through the remainder of that year. In January of 2003, she was excited and honored to join the team of trainers with InnerStrength Sport and Fitness. Her specialties include Children’s Fitness, Body College, Group Fitness, Core Conditioning, Kickboxing, Marathon training and Sports Conditioning.

Since joining InnerStrength, Anita has fulfilled one of her dreams of entering a fitness competition. In August of 2003, she competed in the Nova Fitness Galaxy Competition in St. Pete Beach, Florida where she took home the title of 2003 Nova Fitness Overall North American Champion. The competition included swimsuit, obstacle course, fitness skills and evening gown Q & A components. She attributed her success with hard work and coaching assistance from her fellow InnerStrength trainers.

Q&A provided by Drew Walen of The City Paper.

What kind of music or radio show do you listen to on your way to work?
The House Foundation on 98 WSIX. They definitely start you off in the morning with a smile on your face!

What do you crave?
Chocolate, really rich, creamy chocolate!

What can’t you go 24 hours without doing?
Drinking coffee or wearing makeup. Without either, I’m quite frightening!

What wouldn’t you be caught dead wearing?
A thong bikini! Some things are better left to the imagination!!

What would others be surprised to know about you?
What a tomboy I was growing up. Eventually I figured out that boys don’t like it when you beat them at ANYTHING!!!

What is your favorite fattening meal?
A bleu cheese stuffed filet, asparagus with hollandaise and a brandy alexander from Sperry’s Restaurant!

What is your least favorite and most favorite exercise?
Least- spinning; I know it’s a great workout, but I don’t enjoy it. Most favorite- kickboxing; I particularly love hitting the bags. It’s great stress relief!!

What music do you listen to when you work out?
Dance, hip-hop. REALLY LOUD!!!!

If money were no object, what would you do or buy?
I would make sure any patient, pediatric to geriatric, would have medical care, equipment, and prescriptions they needed that their insurance would not cover!!
